BIO TOILETS IN RAILWAYS
(a): It
is proposed to provide Bio-toilets in passenger coaches on Indian Railways.
However, at present, there is no proposal to install bio-toilets at stations.
(b):
Bio-toilets, based on the indigenously developed design and technology, are
being proliferated by Indian Railways over the last three years.
11,777
bio-toilets have been installed in 4356 passenger coaches till 30th
June 2014. Some of the trains in which bio-toilets have been partially
introduced are indicated below:

In addition to the above trains, coaches fitted with bio-toilets are running in
other trains too in piecemeal manner. These trains are also being progressively
augmented with coaches equipped with bio-toilets.
Approximately Rs. 101 crores has been spent by Indian Railways for this purpose
in the last 3 years.

approximate
funds spent during the years 2011-12 to 2013-14 and funds allocated/estimated
expenditure during the year 2014-15 for proliferation of bio-toilets are as

(c): Yes, Madam. It is
planned to fit bio-toilets in the entire fleet of coaches by the year 2021-22.
(d) & (e): Yes, Madam.
Introduction of bio-toilets in coaches will mitigate the problem of direct
discharge of human waste on the tracks and platform aprons at stations.
In these bio-toilets, the human waste is treated by bacteria which convert human
waste into water and gases namely carbon dioxide and methane. The gases escape
in the atmosphere and the treated benign water is discharged after chlorination.
Thus, bio-toilets are environment friendly and improve overall hygiene.
