RAJA RAM MOHAN ROY
(1772—1883)
Father of the Indian Renaissance, who dedicated
himself to the task of modernising India. Advocated
association, in increased measure, of Indians in the
administration, the separation of Judiciary from the
Executive and the disbandment of Standing Army and
the formation of militia composed of peasants. Agitated
against the East India Company's monopoly in the salt
trade and the systematic drainage of India's resources.
Founder of the Indian Press and ardent champion of
its freedom. Great social and religious reformer and
founder of Brahmo Samaj.
