Chapter X
Decoration work
The Speaker of the First Lok Sabha, Shri G. V. Mavalankar, embarked on a
scheme of decorating the walls of the corridor in the ground floor of Parliament House
with mural paintings depicting the nation's history and culture like the frescoes seen
in the caves of Ajanta and EUora and the stone-cut illustrations found on the walls
of many of our temples and monasteries. These mural paintings with scenes taken
from our Epics> Puranas and ancient history are intended to conjure up before the
eyes of the visitor the cultural traditions and greatness of our nation.
So far,38 murals of 12' x 4' size each painted in egg-tempera have already been
prepared and 35 of them finally approved by an Artists Sub-Committee (Commit
tee of Experts) and displayed. More panels are likely to be ready shortly to cover
the entire outer wall of the ground floor corridor.
