CHANDRAGUPTA MAURYA
In the court-yard opposite Gate No. 5, a symbolic
bronze statue of Chandragupta Maurya, one of the
greatest figures in ancient Indian History and founder
of the Mauryan dynasty, who reigned from 321 B.C.
to 296 B.C., has beei> installed on a red sand-stone
pedestal. It is a 0.74 metre high bust made by Mrs.
Hilda Selegman, a noted sculptress. The bust bears
the following inscription at its bas"e : —
"Shepherd boy—Chandragupta Maurya
dreaming of India he was to create".
