GOPAL KRISHNA GOKHALE
(1866—1915)
In the niche of the outer wall of the Central Hall
opposite Gate No. 1 of the building is placed a beauti-
ful marble bust of Gopal Krishna Gokhalc, eminent
leader and one of the great builders of modern Tnclia.
A patriot, whom Mahatma Gandhi himself regarded
as his "political guru". "Prince of Parliamentarians",
he was leader of the Opposition in the Legislative
Council. Firmly believed in constitutional agitation and
had abiding faith in democratic principles. Founder
of the Servants of India Society.
The statue was sculptured by G. K. Mhatre and
unveiled by Sardar Hukam Singh, Speaker of Lok
Sabha on tlic 9th May, 1966.
