SAROJ1NI NAIDU
(1879—1949)
The "Nightingale of India". Poetess, author and
eminent national leader. She was symbol of the suffer-
ings and sacrifices of the women of India in the national
struggle. First woman President of the Indian National
Congress in 1925 and later Governor of Uttar Pradesh,
1947—49.

Unveiled by—Dr Rajendra Prasad, President of
India, on 16-12-1959.
