RABINDRA NATH TAGORE
(1861—1941)
The "Bard of India", A celebrated lyric poet, dra-
matist, novelist, story-writer, artist, educationist,
patriot, philosopher, thinker and humanist. The first
Indian to win a Nobel Prize for Literature (1913).
Founder of Vishwa-Bharati University at Santiniketan
—was popularly acclaimed as 'Gurudev'. Took active
part in the early days of Swadeshi Movement in Bengal.
Inspired the national movement and several national
reconstruction schemes specially meant for the masses
and villagers. Many of his schemes and ideas later
formed part of Gandhiji's constructive programme.
