G. V. MAVALANKAR
(1888—1956)
Great patriot, social worker, educationist and
writer; a man of profound culture. He was popularly
and affectionately called 'Dada Saheb', Speaker of the
Constituent Assembly (Legislative), 1947—52, and
Speaker of First Lok Sabha, 1952—56. Was also
Speaker of the Bombay Legislative Assembly, 1937—
46 and President of the Central Legislative Assembly,
1946-47. Acknowledged as "Father of Lok Sabha".
As a Parliamentarian, he occupies a very distinguished
and honoured place in the history of parliamentary
democracy and evolution of parliamentary institutions
and procedures in India. He was very vigilant about
the rights of the Members of all parties and groups
represented in the House. Administered numerous
trusts, chief among them being the Gandhi Smarak
Nidhi and Kastorba Memorial Fund.
