MAHATMA GANDHI
(186*—1948)
Architect of India's freedom, universally loved and
respected as "Father of the Nation"; was a saint,
apostle of peace, revolutionary, educationist, journalist,
humanist and social reformer—all rolled into one.
Truth, non-violence, self-sacrifice, self-abnegation,
tolerance and universal love were the constituents of
his many-sided personality. Emancipator of the under-
privileged from caste tyranny and social stigmas; was a
man of indomitable courage; leader of several move-
ments in connection with the freedom struggle viz.
Non-Cooperation Movement, Salt Satyagraha, Quit
India Movement. He infused a new spirit into the
masses, awakened the national consciousness of the
people and moved them to action. Independent India
is his great political monument.
