                         APPENDIX VIII
LETTER FROM THE HONOURABLE THE PRESIDENT OF THE
CONSTITUENT .ASSEMBLY TO THE HONOURABLE THE
PRIME MINISTER, WITH A COPY TO THE HONOURABLE
THE SPEAKER, DATED THE 25TH JANUARY, 1950.

As you are aware, Shri Nandalal Bose of Santini-
ketan has undertaken to carry out the work of decorat
ing the pages of the calligraphed copy of the Constitu
tion. I had informed him that I would pay for the
work. He has so far asked for only for the actual cost
of material. As the work is still going on and is not
likely to be completed till about a month from now,
the final bill for the cost of material would have to be
borne by Government. I am told it will not exceed a
       few thousand rupees.

2, Shri Bose has not suggested any honorarium for
the work of the artists whom he has employed. It
seems to me that, when the work is completed, a sui
table honorarium may be paid, in consultation with
Shri Bose. I trust that Government will bear this in
mind. So far as Shri Bose is personally concerned, I
know that he regards this as a labour of love.

                          APPENDIX IX
LETTER FROM THE HONOURABLE THE PRIME MINISTER TO
THE PRESIDENT, DATED THE 29TH JANUARY, 1950.
You were good enough to write to me on the 25th
January suggesting that an honorarium should be paid
to the artists who have decorated the pages of the
calligraphed copy of the Constitution. I certainly
think that the artists should be paid a suitable honora
rium. But I have no idea what it should be. Perhaps
Shri Nandalal Bose might be informally consulted
       about it.
