APPENDIX I
LETTER FROM SHRI KRISHNA KRIPLANI TO THE HONOUR
ABLE THE PRESIDENT OF THE CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY,
           DATED THE 19TH OCTOBER, 1949.
Thinking over what you had told me yesterday re
garding the preparation of an illuminated manuscript
edition of the Constitution, it seemed to me that if Shri
Nandalal Bose could be persuaded to take the responsi
bility of directing the execution of the illuminated
designs, it would be best. If Nandalal Babu is to be
persuaded, the only way to do it is for you to write
to him directly. I have taken the liberty of preparing
the rough draft of a letter which explains the scheme
as I understood it. If a letter from you to Nanda Babu
on these lines is sent, I feel confident it will have the
       desired effect.
                            !-
I shall be happy to be of any further service.

           .DATED THE 21ST OCTOBER, 1949.
As you perhaps know,, the new Constitution of
India will be finalised by the Constituent.;,Assembly
in November next and will come into force i on 26th
January, 1950. It has been proposed that on that date
we should present to the first Parliament of the Indian
Republic an illuminated manuscript of the entire
Constitution, as it has been, framed in the English
language. It is a big undertaking, for the time at our
disposal is short and the printed version of the
Constitution runs to about 300 pages. But the task is
